What are the main differences between DHI and FUE in hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is often preferred by people who suffer from problems such as hair loss, alopecia or regional hair loss. It is a permanent treatment method. It helps the hair retain its old, natural look. This process is performed with different techniques for each individual. The reason for this is that factors such as the number of hair strands, skin structure and the space to be filled are important. After all this is clarified, the hair transplant technique is also determined.

Generally, this is done by adding active hair follicles to the patient’s temporarily inactive hair follicles. Although this may sound like a mild procedure, it actually has the content of a surgical procedure. It is essential to make sure that it is performed by a medical specialist or dermatologist.

What is a DHI hair transplant?

DHI, which stands for “Direct Hair Implant” and means direct hair transplantation, is a safe procedure that allows for a large hair transplant in a short period of time. Before the procedure, a design is created according to the patient’s hair structure. Then, after anesthesia, the roots, which are usually taken from the patient’s neck, are directly applied to the patient’s area to be treated. This procedure does not require any surgical procedure or incision. It differs from other hair transplantation methods in that both the roots are collected, and the application is started immediately after the procedure. At the same time, this procedure can transplant not only hair, but also eyebrows, mustaches, and beard.

What is FUE hair transplantation?

FUE hair transplantation, which is another most commonly used method after other types of hair transplantation, has become more and more widespread in our country, especially after the 2000s. The difference of this procedure from other methods is that it is a surgical procedure. Healthy hair follicles are collected and placed in the cavities on the head like DHI. However, this is applied after opening channels to the scalp with micro-tip blades. This method takes its name from the heads of these blades. If sapphire head blades are used in this process, it is called “sapphire FUE hair transplantation”, and if slit head blades are used, it is only called “FUE hair transplantation”. The FUE technique can be used to perform eyebrow, beard and mustache fillers. However, the DHI method is generally preferred here.

Main differences between DHI and FUE

  • The application methods are different. In the DHI method, the roots taken from the donor area are applied directly, while in the FUE method they are kept in a special container for a certain period of time.
  • The FUE application has a longer treatment period than the DHI application.
  • The amount of transplanted hair follicles in the FUE procedure is twice as much as in the DHI procedure.
  • While medical blades are used in the FUE technique, only a special hair transplantation pen is used in the DHI technique.
  • The risk of bleeding during the DHI procedure is lower.
  • The special pen used in the DHI technique allows more hair follicles to be inserted into narrower openings.
  • While patients are not shaved during the DHI method, they are shaved during the FUE method.
