What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is when the breast tissue that grows during puberty in men remains the same size without shrinking after puberty.

There is also a breast enlargement associated only with adiposity, which we call pseudo gynecomastia due to excess weight, which causes the same problem, that is, it creates a feminine breast appearance in the breasts. We see that gynecomastia causes many problems, from problems such as not being able to wear t-shirts in summer, not being able to go to the sea, to some posture disorders due to the body leaning forward to hide the breasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gynecomastia refers to the condition of excessive growth of breast tissue in men. This condition is characterized by an abnormal enlargement of the mammary glands or fatty tissue and is usually caused by hormone imbalance or genetic factors.

Gynecomastia is usually caused by an imbalance of the hormones testosterone and estrogen. However, other factors that cause gynecomastia include obesity, medications (e.g., anabolic steroids, antidepressants), medical conditions (e.g., liver disease, thyroid problems) and genetic predisposition.

Diagnosis of gynecomastia is done by a doctor’s physical examination and review of medical history. In addition, hormone tests, blood tests, ultrasound or imaging tests such as mammography may also be used.

Yes, gynecomastia is treatable. Treatment options vary depending on the severity and underlying causes of the condition. Conservative treatment methods include hormone-regulating medications, diet and exercise programs. However, in advanced cases or in cases that do not respond to treatment, surgical intervention may be required.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. During the procedure, breast tissue or fatty tissue is removed and the breast shape is corrected. Incisions are usually made under the breast or around the nipple so that scars are less visible.

The recovery process after gynecomastia surgery usually takes a few weeks. Swelling, bruising and mild pain are normal for the first few days. Patients can usually return to their daily activities within a few days, but it is recommended to avoid heavy lifting or exercise. It may take several months for full recovery and results to be evident.
